This volume investigates the early, second-century reception of the Fourth Gospel. This is an era when its fortunes are surrounded by silence and mystery. It was assumed, until quite recently, that Gnostic and other so-called heterodox groups were the first ones to appreciate this gospel, and hence the mainstream Christians avoided using it until Irenaeus rescued it for the church. Lately, this view has been challenged by several scholars for several reasons. The contributions in this volume, written by leading specialists in their respective fields, offer an approachable, fresh, comprehensive and up-to-date view of the second-century reception of John’s Gospel, in a situation where new understandings about various forms of early Christianity and its multiformity have started to emerge.

Sahidic is one of the most important Coptic literary dialects. A modern, critical edition of the Sahidic translation of the New Testament has long been missing from the academic field. A research project funded by the FWF Austrian Science Fund (P29315) has now made it possible to produce a critical edition of the Sahidic Gospel of John, based on 172 different preserved manuscripts, most of them fragments. Sahidisch ist der wichtigste Literaturdialekt des Koptischen. Seit langem gelten moderne kritische Editionen der sahidischen Übersetzung des Neuen Testaments als Desiderat der Forschung. Ein Forschungsprojekt (P29315) des Österreichischen Wissenschaftsfonds (FWF) ermöglichte eine kritische Edition des sahidischen Johannesevangeliums. Ihr liegen 172 verschiedene, zu großen Teilen fragmentarisch erhaltene, Handschriften zugrunde.

This first stage of the IGNTP John provides the evidence of the 23 papyri. The material is presented in three ways. The first section provides transcriptions of the witnesses, with notes recording difficulties and differences from earlier transcriptions. The second provides a complete apparatus criticus . For each verse there is a record of the extent of the papyri available for it, and a list of all divergences from the collating base. The third section provides a complete set of plates of all the papyri except p66 and p75. There is a detailed introduction, and there are sections on dating and the comparative extent of the papyri. Bringing all this material together for the first time, this edition presents a number of new features in the editing of New Testament witnesses.
